USCHO: WCHA Brings Aboard Bemidji, OmahaUPDATE, 6.26.09 5:00 PMJune 26 — The WCHA has voted to admit Bemidji State and Nebraska-Omaha for the 2010-11 season, bringing the league to 12 teams in what will be its first expansion in 11 years. The expansion, which puts the Bemidji State program back on solid ground only months after it became the first No. 16 overall seed in the NCAA tournament to make the Frozen Four, will come a year earlier than originally anticipated. When the league said in April that it would be seeking another school to join along with the Beavers, commissioner Bruce McLeod indicated that any move would be for the 2011-12 season. The league is scheduled to hold a 5 p.m. teleconference with the media. Bemidji State’s program was on thin ice because of the impending dissolution of the CHA. Nebraska-Omaha, meanwhile, is moving from the CCHA, which will be down to 11 teams. Alabama-Huntsville, the lone remaining CHA member without a future home, has applied to the CCHA. Alabama Huntsville has applied for membership within the CCHA. If accepted, this would return the CCHA to 12-teams. In Our OpinionNMU, thank you for your total lack of leadership in not pursuing admission to the WCHA. The WCHA is strengthened through this move, as are these two programs. NMU needs not just worry about a severely underfunded program, but it also needs to worry about the potential for long term dilution of the CCHA. Finally, Alabama is certainly no UNO. This will likely spell the end of the Puckheads and Red Army Spiritphone traveling trophy and the kinship that has developed there. UNO has always been a strong opponent for the Wildcat's.
