Welcome Joe Shawhan

Second time is a charm for Joey Shawhan. NMU has hired Joe Shawhan as Assistant Hockey Coach. Joe worked as Director of Hockey Operations last your for the Wildcat squad, and was a volunteer student assistant coach the previous year as he completed his degree. Joe came to NMU from Lake State as an assistant coach and the Soo Indians as their head coach.

FACCA LEAVES NMU FOR WESTERN MICHIGAN

Rob Facca, NMU Assistant Coach since the departure of John Olver has accepted a position with the Western Michigan University Bronco's. NMU will begin a search for a replacement assistant coach immediately.

Report: NCAA Pulls Icing Proposal from Rules Committee Changes

USCHO is reporting that the NCAA is pulling a proposal to change rules related to icing in NCAA D-I hockey. The proposed rule changes would have essentially mirrored what occurs within the NHL.

Justin Florek Drafted by Boston Bruins

Picked 5th Round, 135th Overall

NMU Wildcat forward and former Electrician -- Justin Florek was picked by the Bruins in the NHL Draft. Florek a Marquette native will start his Junior year with the Wildcats this fall. Florek found out his was picked in the draft while working at the Marquette YMCA. More information can be found at Upper Michigan's Source.

NCAA Rules Committee Advances Proposals

Contact to head proposed to be a major

The NCAA rules committee is looking at adopting several new rules. These include:

  • Contact to head will become a 5-minute major with either a game misconduct or DQ.
  • Eliminate short-handed icing
  • Goaltenders switching ends between 3rd period and OT
  • Teams to get a power play even when they score on a delayed penalty

Summer hiatus

Official 2010-11 Schedule to be Announced Soon

If you have not noticed... CatHockey.com is on the unofficial summer hiatus. Any news coming from the Wildcats will be posted, but news in the summer time is typically a trickle.

The official 2010-11 schedule will be announced later in June. A draft schedule has been out for awhile now, we will post the final once it has been released.

Facebook User Authentication Update

This summer we will get the Facebook unified login working. The plugin has been trickier to implement than anticipated.

NMU facilities staff were busy today putting new markings and logos on the Berry Events Center ice sheet today - June 8, 2010. Hey, it's summer - slow hockey news time.
